ASSOCIATION
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is OSACA ?
A: OSACA is - first of all - an architecture for an open, vendor-neutral control system. It is the result of two corresponding ESPRIT projects named OSACA: OSACA I (EP6379) and OSACA II (ESPRIT 9115). Within these projects the architecture was specified and implemented by the partners of the consortium.
Q: Are there still running OSACA-related Projects ?
A: Yes, there are still running OSACA-related projects on a European, national and regional level. All these projects deal with applications and tools for the OSACA architecture. Its is also planned to start new projects which will extend the OSACA architecture for the use in hard real-time environments.
Q: What is the OSACA Association?
A: The OSACA Association is an organisation which was set up to keep and maintain the results of OSACA and related projects. It currently consists of over 35 industrial and research members.
Q: How were the OSACA projects funded?
A: OSACA was funded by the European Commission within the ESPRIT III programme. Research institutes received a funding of 100%, companies had to finance 50% by themselves.
The total budget of OSACA (May 1992 to April 1995) I was 7.7 MECU with a funding of 3.3 MECU.

Q: How is the German HÜMNOS project related to OSACA?
A: The HÜMNOS project (1995-1998) was based on the OSACA results. Within HÜMNOS, applications for the OSACA architecture were elaborated in different areas, such as CNC, PLC, HMI, Tool Management, Pallet Management, Maintenance and Diagnosis. Also tools like a data monitor or a configuration system were developed.

The HÜMNOS project concluded with two demonstrators at BMW and Daimler-Benz in March/April 1998.
