The HÜMNOS-Project was launched as a major project for
open control systems in Germany in 1995 within the initiative "Production 2000"
funded by the German ministry for research (BMBF). The project HÜMNOS ("Development
of vendor-neutral modules for the user-oriented application of the open architecture for
control systems") is co-ordinated by the German machine tool builder association VDW.
Its main aim is the development of applications for open control systems based on the
results of OSACA. The consortium consists of end users (BMW, Mercedes Benz), machine tool
builders (Alfing, Grunewald, Heller, Homag, Hüller Hille, Index, Mikromat, Pfauter,
Trumpf and Unipo), control vendors (Bosch, DASA, Grundig electronics, ISG and SIEMENS) and
several research institutes.

With the contribution of these partners the specifications of the
OSACA communication and its reference architecture were enhanced. Through a contract for a
fully bi-directional information exchange between the project and the OSACA initiative a
close co-operation with equal benefits for both sides is guaranteed.

The project programme mainly covers the specification and
development of configurable software applications for organisational functions of the
controls as well as modules for diagnosis, maintenance and machine data/operational data
acquisition. Additional activities are the harmonisation of design standards for the human
machine interface and the development of a concept for a configuration tool.
The cross section task deals with the cost effects and benefits of the application of
vendor neutral open controls, which are analysed along the value added chain.
For the final demonstration of the project results, two demonstrators at BMW and
Daimler-Benz are realised and presented in the beginning of 1998. These pilots are used to
test the results of HÜMNOS and OSACA in an industrial environment.
